Are E-Bikes Legal in WA? Here’s What You Need to Know
🚦 Short Answer: Yes - but there are rules.
If you're riding an electric bike around Perth or anywhere in Western Australia, good news - they're legal.
But to stay on the right side of the law (and avoid any weird stares from boomers on footpaths), here’s what you should know before you ride.
✅ What Counts as an E-Bike in WA?
To be classified as a legal “power-assisted pedal cycle” in WA, your e-bike must meet one of the following:
1. Pedalec standard (EN15194)
– 250-watt motor max
– Motor cuts out at 25km/h
– Must require pedalling (you can’t throttle from a stop)
2. Power-assisted bike (non-pedelec)
– Motor no more than 200 watts
– Can be throttle-based
– Must still have working pedals
Most Dirodi e-bikes (like the Rover, Classic, and X models) meet the 250W pedelec standard, so you’re good to go.
🚫 What’s Not Legal?
E-bikes with motors over 250W
Bikes that run without pedalling and go full throttle over 25km/h
Basically: if it rides like a motorbike, it’s not an e-bike in the eyes of WA road rules.
🛣️ Where Can You Ride?
✔ On shared paths
✔ On bike lanes and most public roads
✔ On footpaths (as long as you're riding safe and giving space)
Just ride with awareness - and you’ll be fine.
💬 Do You Need a Licence?
Nope. No licence, no rego, no insurance required - as long as your e-bike meets the rules.
That’s one of the best parts about going electric: no licence, no rego, just easy freedom on two wheels.
🧭 Bottom Line:
250W or under = ✅
Pedal assist = ✅
Respect the path = ✅
