Are E-Bikes Legal in WA? Here’s What You Need to Know
Short Answer: Yes - but only if it meets legal specs.
If you're riding an electric bike around Perth or anywhere in Western Australia, good news - e-bikes are legal if they follow WA’s road rules.
To stay on the right side of the law (and avoid any passive aggressive stares from boomers on footpaths), here’s what actually counts as a legal e-bike in WA.
✅ What Counts as an E-Bike in WA?
To be classified as a legal “power-assisted pedal cycle” in WA, your e-bike must meet one of the following:
1. Pedelec (EN15194 compliant) - Most common legal option:
Max 250W motor
Pedal assist only - no throttle above 6km/h
Motor cuts out at 25km/h
Must be pedalled to activate motor assist
2. Non-pedelec power-assisted bicycle:
Max 200W motor
Throttle based is allowed (even from a stop)
Must still have working pedals
Most Dirodi e-bikes meet the 250W pedelec standard, so you’re good to go.
🚫 What’s Not Legal?
E-bikes with motors over 250W
Bikes that go full throttle with no pedalling beyond 6km/h
Any e-bike that exceeds 25km/h with motor assist
Basically: if it rides like a motorbike, it’s not an e-bike in the eyes of WA road rules.
Where Can You Ride?
✔ On shared paths
✔ On bike lanes and most public roads
✔ On footpaths (as long as you're riding safe and giving space)
Just ride with awareness - and you’ll be fine.
Do You Need a Licence?
Nope. No licence, no rego, no insurance required - as long as your e-bike meets the rules.
That’s one of the best parts about going electric: no licence, no rego, just easy freedom on two wheels.
Bottom Line:
250W or under = ✅
Pedal assist = ✅
Respect the path = ✅
